Making speeches and being lobbied by locals

On 16 May I was guest speaker for the Eastern Bays/Remuera U3A group at the Mission Bay Bowling Club. U3A stands for the University of the Third Age – that is the age of retirement. They’re a great bunch of smart senior citizens who partake in study groups and different tours around the region.

I got to know them in Newmarket and they’re following the Super City with great interest. They are sick of Auckland’s over-planning and want action. I broke the bad news that the only thing happening this term is more planning!

I am being lobbied by theatre-going residents of the Orakei ward to change my vote at the end of the month, and vote in support of $10m towards the $41m Auckland Theatre Company’s 600-seat theatre down on the Tank Farm.

Given we’re currently having to find $62m in savings, I argued for a deferral and suggested the ATC go back to using the 700-seat SkyCity Theatre in the interim. The NZ Herald is against a new theatre and has suggested other venue options, including the Maidment and the Bruce Mason.

Should I support the $10m?
